Where did your ancestors live - South-West - Tiverton

Below is some genealogy information and websites about the history and social geography of Tiverton.

North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in Devon, Tiverton sits in the east of the county on the confluence of the rivers Exe and Lowman. Traditionally part of the wool trade, this peaked during the industrial revolution but was in decline by close of the 1800s due to the expansion of cotton and the textile industry esle-where in the country. In 1815, lace production began, brought in by John Heathcoat and remained in the town as a large employer. By the time that the town connected to the Grand Western canal in 1838, and the rail network in 1848, Tiverton had boomed again. Lace production, and the Heathcoat factory, went into decline in the 1900s.
