North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in Devon, Plymouth sits on the south coast of England at the mouth of the rivers Plym and Tamar. Traditionally a port town, Plymouth boomed in the 1800s becoming a major trading port (grain, timber and coal) as well as an embarkation point for travellers to the Americas. Nearby Devenport became a major ship-builder and dockyard for the Royal Navy. Population grew rapidly in both places. Plymouth was connected to the rail network in 1877. In the 1900s the port was importing maize, barley, wheat, guano, sodium nitrate, sugar cane and phosphate. Other industry grew such as gas and chemical works as well as gin production from the Plymouth Gin Distillery. It was the naval presence that resulted in numerous air-raids, 59 in total, by the Germans in World War Two.
