Where did your ancestors live - South-West - Exeter

Below is some genealogy information and websites about the history and social geography of Exeter.

North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in Devon, Exeter is the county town. It sits on the River Exe. Traditionally a large employer in the wool and cloth industries, Exeter produced agricultural products during the industrial revolution. They also grew initially in textiles. However, this was mostly due to the fast-flowing river access. Once steam power came to the fore, Exeter could no longer compete due to its lack of coal and did not expand like other towns. It's canal system was developed though and Exeter was connected to the rail network in 1844. During the Second World War, Exeter experienced German air-raids.
