Description: Located in Somerset, Bridgewater sits in the centre of the county on the River Parret. Traditionally the town was focused on it's port. This remained important throughot the 1800s importing wine, fish, grain, timber, coal and hemp whilst exporting bricks, tiles, cloth, wool , wheat and cement. The harbour also contained mills, chandlers and timber yards. Brick and tile industries also grew in Bridgewater in the late 1800s. Bath brick was made here. Some 24 million bricks were made in the 1890s alone. Railway carriage workshops and ironworks were other local employers. Light bombing of the town occurred during the Second World War. Brick and tile industries declined following the war due to a lack of machinery.
