Description: Located in Devon, Barnstaple sits on the River Taw on the north coast of the county. Traditionally involved in the textile industry, Barnstaple also had a good sized port as well as being the largest market town in the north of Devon. In 1801 the population was 3,748. Barnstaple was connected to the rail network in 1848. The pannier market, selling agricultural produce, was built in the 1850s as was Butcher's Row, ten shops with columns of Bath Stone supported by wrought iron. By 1901 the population had risen to 9,698.
