Description: Located to the South-East of Hertfordshire, Watford borders both Greater London and Buckinghamshire. In 1798 Water was connected to the Grand Junction canal (Grand Union canal). Coal brought in via canal allowed the town to grow. In 1831 the population of the parish of Watford was 5,293. In 1834 the Watford Gas and Coke Company was formed. In 1837 Watford was connected to the rail network. Hertfordshire, served by the Grand Union Canal and the River Lea navigation, allowed industry to grow in the area. Main industries were brewing (Benskin's and Sedgwick's), tanning and paper-making. The latter was made famous by John Dickinson and Co. who made high quality paper. Printing industries followed. Following the Second World War, Ovaltine had a large factory in Watford. Today, it is a major regional commerical centre.
