Description: Located in Essex, Southend sits in the south-east of the county on the Thames estuary. Traditionally a sea-side resort, Southend boasts the world's longest pier which was built in 1830. In 1890 an electric railway was built to run the entire 1.33 miles of the pier. At the turn of the century a theme park called the Kursaal was opened.
