Description: Located in Hampshire, Southampton sits on the south coast of England on the rivers Test, Itchen and Hamble and is the county town. Traditionally a port town and sea-side resort, Southampton has long been of strategic importance and was the embarkation point for many wars including Napoleonic, Crimean, Boer and both the First and Second World War. Taking large numbers of tourists the town changed dramatically in the 1800s. The first docks were built in 1842. Southampton was connected to the rail network in 1840. Passenger ships departed from Southampton, including the Titanic, and the town flourished becoming a major international port. In the 1920's, Supermarine Spitfire was designed in Southampton. The town was heavily bombed during the Second World War.
