North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in Hampshire, Portsmouth sits on the south coast of England and actually sits on Portsea Island. Traditionally a port town, Portsmouth was a strategic base for the Royal Navy and this has ever remained the largest employer. Portsmouth was the site of the first fleet to sail with prisoner transports to Australia. In 1801 the population was 32,160. A block mill was built in 1802 which provided pulley blocks to be used in ship's rigging. The city was well-fortified in case of attack, principally by the French during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1901 the population was 188,133. It was bombed during both the First and Second World Wars. Portsmouth was used as an embarkation point for the D-Day landings in 1944.
