Description: Located in Kent, Maidstone sits on the River Medway. The river, which runs into the Thames estuary, provided Maidstone with much of it's wealth which was derived from agriculture. In 1797 an army barracks was completed. Maidstone built a prison in 1819. Other employment in the area was paper production, stone quarrying, brewing and cloth production. Maidstone was connected to the Rail Network in the 1840s.
