Description: Located in Kent, Gillingham sits to the north of the county on the River Medway. Ir developed as a maritime area (Chatham being just next to it) and it's dockyards were of particular importance. Defenses to protect the dockyards at Chatham were also put in place. A series of forts were built that would protect both from land and sea. These large constructions meant larger numbers of workers who needed to live somewhere. Their settlement merged with Gillingham and the town was born. It was connected to the rail network in 1858. By 1901 the population of Gillingham was 42,530.
