Description: Located in Kent, Folkestone sits on the South-East coast of England. Traditionally a fishing village it developed a strong port and became strategically important to the country. Proximity to France also helped to promote trade although that also meant defenses had to be built around the town as well, such as Martello towers (small forts fortified against cannon fire with one cannon and 20-30 men inside. In 1842 Folkestone was connected to the rail network. This helped to bring more trade but also tourist who wanted to visit a sea-side resort.
