Description: Located in Greater London, Deptford sits on the River Thames. Employment has traditionally centred on the river with fishing, dockyards and ship-building. The docks were home to the Royal Navy. Deptford went into decline once the Royal Navy moved away from the area. This occurred due to better dockyards both at Plymouth and Chatham and the fact that fewer ships were required following the end to the Napoleonic Wars. Deptford began to focus less on ship-building as a result and more on victualing, which was provisioner of army goods and produce. The shipyard was instead used as the site for the Foreign Cattle Market where at it's peak over 230,000 cattle were imported annually. However, this too fell into decline and the site was taken over by the War Office in 1914 when it was used as an army supply reserve depot. Deptford suffered extensive bomb damage in the Second World War. At times part of Kent and Surrey, Deptford was part of London from 1889 and Greater London from 1965.
