Description: Located in Kent, Dartford sits on the very edge of Greater London on the River Darent. Traditionally a market town, Dartford, also had several different industries which grew with the industrial revolution, such as agriculture, fulling, brewing, chalk mining, lime burning, fabric printing (Augustus Appelgath), paper production (Dartford Paper Mills opened in 1868), engineering (J&E Hall), mustard production (Saunders & Harrison) and gunpowder production. Later aircraft manufacture took place with Vickers opening a factory as did chemical production at the Burroughs-Wellcome factory. The First World War saw an influx of Belgian immigration.
