Description: Located in Kent, Chatham sits on the River Medway. Long an important naval dockyard, Chatham grew as a town of some importance. It soon began to build ships as well as simply refit them and in 1760 completed the HMS Victory, one of Nelson's flagships. Stone, timber and iron were imported on barges to accommodate these needs. Chatham was connected to the rail network in 1858. In the 1920s and 1930s the dockyard was making submarines. As the dockyard grew, so to did the need to protect it both from sea and land attack and so a series of forts were constructed. Barracks followed which housed the men to man these forts.
