Description: Located in Hampshire, Basingstoke sits on the River Loddon in the north of the county. Traditionally a market town which focused predominantly on cloth and malting. In 1801 it had a population of 2,589. Brewing took off in the 1800s. Basingstoke was connected to the rail network in 1839. Thomas Burberry opened a shop in 1856, selling garbadine, a tightly woven fabric used for suits and overcoats. Today Burberry is a well-known brand. Alfred Milward opened the first of his shoe shops in 1857. In 1898, the production of steam-powered lorries began at the Thornycroft factory. This became the largest employer in the town. In 1901 the population had reached over 10,000. Basingstoke suffered from German air-raids in the Second World War.
