Description: Located in Greater Manchester, Rochdale sits on the River Roch at the base of the Pennines. Traditionally a mill town, it boomed in the industrial revolution. The Rochdale canal played no small part in this, importing and exporting cotton, coal and wool. Mass-unemployment came in the 20th century when the industry went into decline. Traditionally part of Lancashire, it became part of Greater Manchester in 1974.
