Where did your ancestors live - North-West - Preston

Below is some genealogy information and websites about the history and social geography of Preston.

North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in Lancashire, Preston sits on the River Ribble. Preston was a mill town and already had a thriving cottage industry. Well-known locals such as Richard Arkwright (alleged inventor of the carding engine and spinning frame) helped drive the growth of the town and turn it into an industrial giant. Engineering was also a large employer. In 1815, Preston became the first English town outside of London to be lit by gas lamps. Like most of mill towns, mass-unemployment came in the 20th century when the industry went into decline.
