Description: Located in Merseyside, Liverpool sits on the River Mersey and the West coast of England. Its port was the driving force behind the city's growth with major links in the slave trade. Trade with the colonies in the West Indies predominantly arrived in Liverpool. By 1800 40% of the world's trade passed through the docks. In 1830 Liverpool was connected to the rail network. In the 1840s, Liverpool saw a massive influx of Irish immigrants caused by the potato famine. At times the wealth of Liverpool eclipsed that of London and building works to equal this boast boomed as a result. In just 10 years 25% if the population was Irish. Liverpool saw many German air-raids during the Second World War, killing over 2,500 people. Liverpool was traditionally part of Lancashire but joined Merseyside in 1974.
