Always an important city in England due to its location, Carlisle industrialised in the 1800s, focusing on the textile industry. They also had engineering works and produced food. The railway also brought in many jobs in what was a busy station linking London and Glasgow. Historically, Carlisle was part of Cumberland. In 1974 they joined Cumbria.
