Below is some genealogy information and websites about the history and social geography of Burnley.

North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in Lancashire, Burnley sits on both the rivers Caler and Brun. In the 1700s Burnley manufactured wool but had begun to produce cotton. They also mined coal locally. Burnley connected to the Leeds and Liverpool canal in 1796 which gave rise to the construction of cotton mills. Ironworks and foundries were also built to provide the machinery needed, such as the Burnley Loom (a mill engine). In the 1840's Burnley saw an influx of Irish immigrants as a result of the potato famine. In 1848 they were connected to the rail network. By 1866 Burnley was the largest producer of cotton in the world. In 1901 there were more than 100,000 people living in Burnley. The cotton industry was in decline leading up to the Second World War and mass-unemployment followed for the town.
