Description: Located in Lancashire, Blackpool sits on the Western coast of England. Blackpool became a spa-town in the 1700s with many wealthy tourists travelling there to rest and cure ailments. In 1801 the population of Blackpool was just 473. In 1846 Blackpool was connected to the rail network. Visitor numbers increased as did businesses required to sustain them. In 1879, Blackpool had the world's first street lighting installed. In 1885 the tram system was put in. These sorts of ideas helped to put Blackpool on the map. In addition to this many mill workers took their day's rest here. By the end of the 1800s, the population of Blackpool stood at over 35,000. It was estimated that they took over a million tourists a year. By 1897 the HMS Foudroyant grounded at Blackpool.
