Description: Located in North Yorkshire, York sits upon the Rivers Ouse and Foss. In 1801 the population of York was 24,080. Always well connected due to its location and significance as England's major northern city, York was connected to the rail network in 1839. The railway became a major employer in the city with North Eastern Railway headquarters employing 5,500 people alone. Industry grew due to close proximity to the railway such as Rowntree's Cocoa Works and Terry's Confectionery Works. By 1901, York's population had grown to 90,665.
