In 1801 Middlesbrough was just a hamlet with on 25 people in it. Soon after, work began to make it a port and in 1830 was connected to the rail network. The dock was built in the 1840s and in the 1850s ironstone discovered nearby. Iron foundries sprang up and produced pig-iron. Steep production (which helped build the Sydney Harbour Bridge) also began shortly afterwards. In 1874 rock salt was found and extracted. Later Middlesbrough built several shipyards.
