Description: Located in Lincolnshire, Grimsby is located at the estuary of the River Humber. In 1801 it's population was just 1,524. Grimsby thrived in the 1800s thanks to it's port. The importing of iron, wheat, hemp, timber and flax turned the fortunes of the town around. Fishing also increased during this time, taking fishermen from elsewhere in the country. In 1848 Grimsby was connected to the rail network. Coal was exported from the port, brought in by rail. In 1901 Grimsby's population has soared to 75,00. Grimsby suffered a lot of bomb damage in the Second World War which was used a naval minesweeper base. Traditionally part of North Riding of Lincolnshire. In 1974 Grimsby became part of Humberside. In 1996 Humberside was disbanded. It is now part of the unitary authority of North East Lincolnshire.
