Where did your ancestors live - North-East - Doncaster

Below is some genealogy information and websites about the history and social geography of Doncaster.

North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in South Yorkshire, Doncaster was situated on the River Don and was traditionally part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Always a communications hub (River Don, and Don Navigation) with it's good geographical location, Doncaster became an industrial giant focusing on coal-mining. Coal was transported to the steel centres of Sheffield and Rotherham. Wire rope-making, steel foundries and glass-making were additional industries. Connection to the rail network assisted growth and with it came the Great Northern Railway Locomotive and Carriage Works. These works were used for munitions production during the First and Second World Wars. In the early 1930s, the tractor production began in Doncaster.
