North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia
Description: Located in the area of the West Midlands, it was historically part of Staffordshire. Walsall changed dramatically during the industrial revolution with limestone quarrying and producing chains, buckles, saddles and metal-working. There was also some coal-mining, iron-founding and brass-founding. Walsall was connected to the canal network in 1801 and to the rail network in 1847. To accomodate the influx of people, money was spent not only on housing but on new buildings such as churches, gas works and almshouses. By 1900 Walsall was beginning to focus more on leather industry and today is noted for producing handbags for the Queen. In 1974 Wolverhampton became part of the West Midlands. This was abolished in 1986.
