Where did your ancestors live - Midlands - Stoke-on-Trent

Below is some genealogy information and websites about the history and social geography of Stoke-on-Trent.

North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in Staffordshire and known commonly as The Potteries, Stoke is synonymous with the ceramics industry. This came to the fore in the 1600s thanks to local supplies of clay, lead and salt which were used in glazing and abundant supplies of coal used to fire the kilns. Perhaps the most famous example of the industry is that of Joseph Wedgewood, setting up business in 1759. During the Industrial Revolution some 4,000 bottle-shaped brick kilns could be seen across the Stoke sky-line. Only 47 remain today. The other major industry was coal mining.
