North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia
Description: Located in the East Midlands, Nottingham is the traditional centre of the county Nottinghamshire. It actually became a county unto itself in 1888. It is well-known for its lace and hosiery industry as well as bicycle production. Lace production was the centre of Nottingham's economic success, being internationally recognised. The lace industry died after the end of the Second World War facing international (and cheaper) labour costs. Nottingham also had extreme poverty and as a result, some of the worst slum housing in Britain. In 1801 Nottingham's population stood at just 29,000. By 1901 this had surged to 240,000. It has remained fairly static since, sitting at around 280,000 today.
