Below is some genealogy information and websites about the history and social geography of Mow Cop.

North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located on the border of Cheshire and Staffordshire, Mow Cop is a tiny village. It had many different employments from fustian mills to coal mining to brick making and stone quarrying. There were 3 fustian mills in Mow Cop producing corduroy or velvet. The brickworks was built next to a clay pit, with clay dug out, often by hand, and placed into brick moulds. They would make up to 30,000 bricks at a time. Local stone quarries mined millstone grit for use as mill stones, in road-making and for use in earthenware manufacture.
