Description: Located in the East Midlands, Leicester is the county town of Leicestershire and sits upon the River Soar. Growth of the city was due to the industrial revolution. Leicester was connected to the Grand Union canal in the 1790s. Local railway connections were established in 1832 and by 1840 the national rail network connected with Leicester. In 1861 the population of Leicester was some 68,000. Driven by the coal brought in via good transport links, major employers were shoe-making, hosiery and later, engineering (crane makers, steam boiler makers, structural steel makers). By 1901 Leicester's population had swollen to 212,000.
