Description: Located in the East Midlands, Derby is a unitary authority (essentially a county unto itself) and the county town of Derbyshire. Situated upon the River Derwent it was traditionally part of Derbyshire. In 1801 it's population was just 14,695. Derby was a centre for the production of hosiery thanks to the silk mills of the surrounding area and the city boomed as a result. In 1840, Derby was connected to the national rail network. Much manufacturing grew as a result with rolling stock factories such as Bombardier Transportation and Midland Railway works providing employment. In 1901 it's population was 118,469. Expansion of Derby continued with companies such as International Combustion producing pulverised fuel and later steam-generating boilers. More recently motor industry has been a large employer. Today the population of Derby stands at over 220,000.
