Below is some genealogy information and websites about the history and social geography of Coventry.

North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in what is today known as the West Midlands, Coventry was once part of Warwickshire and is one of the largest cities in the area. Since 1889 it has also been a unitary authority, essentially a county unto itself. During the industrial revolution, Coventry became one of the centres for clock and watch manufacturing. Skilled labours focused on the bicycle, motor, aircraft and machine tool industries as international clock and watch industry (mainly Swiss) took off. The 1920 and 30s saw Coventry boom from its industrial heart. Coventry was famously bombed by the Germans in the Second World War, crushing much of the city centre which was subsequently re-built. The idea had been to eradicate the munitions and aircraft factories around Coventry. Building work was at a premium following the war and combined an upsurge in the motor industry, population grew with it.
