Description: Located in West Midlands, Birmingham is Great Britain's second city. Originally part of Warwickshire but moved to the West Midlands in 1974. Birmingham, as with most cities, experienced a massive increase in population thanks to the industrial revolution. Low agricultural wages combined with fewer jobs thanks to the introduction of machinery, plus the creation of many factories in the city were the key drivers as well as connection to the canal system and railway networks. Housing and sanitation were stretched to the limit as a result. Smog was heavy thanks to coal burning both domestic and industrial, rubbish was thrown in the streets, and there was little to no sewage system until the mid-1800s. Birmingham was one of the first English cities to significantly improve itself with proper sewers and drains installed, controlled house building, paved streets and lighting. Birmingham was heavily bombed during the Second World War.
