Description: Located in Greater London, St John's Wood sits North London. It gained it's name as it was once owned by by the Knights of St John and sits on the site of the Great Forest of Middlesex. It was developed as a residential area in the 1800s by building villas, as opposed to terraced housing. Lord's cricket ground was built in 1814. A barracks exists in St John's Wood which is home to the Royal Horse Artillery. St John's Wood housed professional merchants and business men. Originally the parish of St Marylebone in the county of Middlesex, it became part of London in 1889. In 1900 it was renamed the Metropolitan Borough of St Marylebone. In 1965 it became part of the London Borough of the City of Westminster in Greater London.
