North-East, North-West, South-East, South-West, Midlands, London, East Anglia

Description: Located in Greater London, Stepney sits in the east-end of London on the River Thames. Historically an area of marshland with small levels of population, Stepney was always a poor area. It grew in the 1800s, mostly due to immigrant workers and the migration of poor local workers who flocked there looking for employment in the docks or railways. Other industries such as book-making also became popular as well as brewing. In particular, Stepney saw massive Jewish immigration in the 1880s, early 1900s and again before and during the wars. These were mostly Ashkenazi Jews, fleeing from eastern Europe and Russia. It suffered heavy bomb damage during the Second World War. Originally the parish of Stepney in the county of Middlesex, it became part of London in 1889. In 1900 it was renamed the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney. In 1965 it became part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in Greater London.
