Description: Located in Greater London, Spitalfields sits in the east-end of London. Well know for it's market, which was established in the 1600s, it sold meat and vegetables. Spitalfields was home to a large textile industry in the 1700s as Hugenot silk weavers settled in the area. Irish linen weavers also migrated here. In the 1800s textiles declined thanks in part to cheap imports from France. Tailoring, furniture and boot production increased as a result. In the 1880s massive Jewish immigration took place as Ashkenazi Jews fled persecution in Eastern Europe and Russia. Poverty, over-crowding and crime were rife. It suffered heavy bomb damage in the Second World War. Originally the parish of Spitalfields in the county of Middlesex, it became part of London in 1889. In 1900 it was renamed the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney. In 1965 it became part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in Greater London.
