Description: Located in Greater London, Shoreditch sits in the east-end of London. Shoreditch was home to a large textile industry in the 1700s as Hugenot silk weavers settled in the area. In the 1800s this continued but other industry grew as well such as furniture production. Both industries fell into decline and by turn of the century Shoreditch was a poor area, with high poverty and poor living conditions. It suffered heavy bomb damage in the Second World War. Originally the parish of Shoreditch (St Leonard's) in the county of Middlesex, it became part of London in 1889. In 1900 it was renamed the Metropolitan Borough of Shoreditch. In 1965 it became part of the London Borough of Hackney in Greater London.
