Description: Located in Greater London, Poplar sits in the East End of London. It is part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Poplar is associated with the docks on the River Thames which provided the majority of employment in the area, whether shipping, ship-building or working in one of the factories or warehouses along the Thames. These warehouses took in goods from the West India docks such as sugar, coffee and rum. Factories included chain cable production, wire rope works and iron foundries. Originally part of the parish of Poplar, in Middlesex, it became part of London in 1889. Poplar joined the Metropolitan Borough of Poplar in 1900. In 1965 it became part of London Borough of Tower Hamlets when it joined Greater London..
