Description: Located in Greater London, Hammersmith in the West End of London to the north of the River Thames. It is part of the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. In the 1800s market gardens and brick fields dominated the economy. Hammersmith flourished in the industrial revolution with the J Lyons power station employing up to 30,000 and the Osram lamp factory employing large numbers also. An iron foundry was built to produce machine parts and steam boilers, as well as breweries. Hammersmith had a large influx of Polish migrants following the Second World War. Originally in Middlesex, first in the parish of Fulham and from 1834 the parish of Hammersmith, it became part of London in 1889. In 1900 it became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith. In 1965 it became part of Greater London as the London Borough of Hammersmith.
