Description: Located in Greater London, Chelsea sits in South London on the banks of the River Thames. It is part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Employment in the 1700s came from the production of Chelsea Buns, as well as the thriving porcelain industry which grew in the 1800s. Chelsea Royal Hospital, the Duke of York's barracks and the Chelsea barracks (household divisions) were also nearby. Chelsea had a reputation as bohemian, being the home for artists, poets, writers and radicals. The Chelsea College of Art and Design was built in 1895. Originally part of the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea, it joined the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in 1965 as part of Greater London.
