Description: Located in Greater London, Aldgate sits in the east-end of London. Aldgate has ever been a gate-way into the city of London. Sephardic Jews formed an important part of Aldgate before being expelled by Edward I in 1290. They returned under Cromwell and built a large synagogue at Bevis Marks. One of the murders by Jack the Ripper took place in Aldgate. Originally the parish of Aldgate in the county of Middlesex, it became part of London in 1889. In 1900 it joined the City of London. In 1965 it became part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in Greater London.
