Description: Located in Essex, Chelmsford was one of the original Roman settlements in Great Britain. Originally Chelmsford was predominantly an agricultural town. However, when connected to the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation in 1797, industry boomed, particularly milling and malting. It was connected to the rail network in 1842, thanks to the construction of three viaducts. Around 1850, agricultural machinery became the focal point of the town, causing the building of foundries and factories. In 1898 a ball-bearing making factory was built, called The Hoffman Manufacturing Company. In 1899, Guglielmo Marconi opened the world's first radio factory in Chelmsford. His factory was where the UK's first radio broadcast originated. Chemsford built up light engineering (such as Crompton Parkinson, an electrical engineering factory set up in 1878) resulting in attack by the Germans in World War Two.
