This facility opened on 27 August 1996 with a complement of 6 staff (5 FTE) It now has 2 archivists, one local studies librarian, 3 searchroom assistants 2 being p/t and 1 clerk-typist/receptionist.
The Lowther archive, covering many of the manorial records for the area has remained at Carlisle Record Office, as it is of Cumbria-wide interest. Records from the Leconsfield archive, still in family hands, can be ordered.Popular items are being microfilmed as funds permit. There is also some family history material in the local studies files. We have a small collection of photographs including some aerial views and a good coverage of Ordnance Survey maps of Cumberland (County Series)and the National Grid for Copeland district.
