Description: Someone who worked applied varnish to furniture to give it a high-quality look and protect the wood. They suffered from health problems as a result of their proximity to the varnish. Quicksilver poisoning either from inhalation or from physical exposure caused a pricking or burning sensation in the stomach, thirst and vomiting (similar to arsenic poisoning) as well as bad breath, stomach pains and purging from the bowels.
