Description: Someone who tanned skins and hides into leather. It was considered one of the worst jobs you could have, although it required skilled workers to carry out. This was mainly due to the awful smell which accompanied the trade. As a result, tanners were always found in the poorest quarter of towns and cities. The hides themselves were treated with a lime solution before being stripped of hair and any remaining fat. It was a tough job requiring long hours and lots of physical work. The hides were then dried. The mix of chemical solution, smoke and bacteria caused several health problems.
