Description: Someone who made and sold straw hats. Also known as straw plaiters for their use of plaited straw. This had been woven with flattened straw into ribbons. It was these ribbons that were bought by hat-makers to produce hats. The straw industry employed vast numbers of workers in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire and drove their local economies. Straw from these areas and Suffolk were considered the best quality.
