Census Occupations - Stone Mason

Description: Someone who worked in the mining industry cutting and carving the stone to prepare for use in building. It was a skilled job, producing finely carved stonework as well as speciality stone for bespoke houses. Exposed to the dangers of working with large stones they could also pick up diseases by inhaling dust from the stone. These are know generally as the term pneumoconiosis but depending on the type of dust could cause flint's disease or potter's rot.
