Census Occupations - Policeman

Description: Someone who was a member of the police force (an organised civil force which keeps law and order). By 1856 all counties had to set up their own constabulary. Constables had to be able to read and write, and they had no holidays. They even had to get permission from the Chief Constable before marrying. See also: Bobby, Peeler.
