Description: Someone who worked as a seaman of the lowest rank. The position is essentially an apprenticeship to become an Able Seaman, gaining experience and understanding of both the ship and the sea. An ordinary seaman was expected to take on duties such as cleaning the deck, performing maintenance, splicing rope, dealing with rigging, securing cargo and working with various types of equipment on-board, whilst learning from senior members of the vessel about standing watch, lookout duties, and being a helmsman.
